Made on the windswept Azorean island of Faial, Omorro Azores Amanteigado is a torta-style cow’s milk cheese with a luxuriously creamy, unctuous texture. Its rich, buttery paste is balanced by a gentle tang, giving the cheese both indulgence and freshness. The result is an expressive Portuguese cheese that reflects the island’s lush pastures and maritime climate.
Serve Omorro at room temperature, when its soft interior becomes especially luscious and spoonable. It makes an elegant centerpiece for a cheese board and pairs beautifully with crusty bread, fruit preserves, honey, toasted nuts, or fresh pears. Its creamy texture and subtle tang also complement cured meats and other Portuguese specialties.
Omorro is made near the natural reserve of Morro do Castelo Branco by cheesemaker Nuno Caldeira, with the help of his wife, Marcia, and his brother, Rui. Since 2012, the family has sourced milk from local farms committed to sustainable agriculture and animal welfare, crafting distinctive cheeses that capture the character of Faial and the Azores.
Beverage Pairings: Portuguese white wine, Verdelho, dry Riesling, farmhouse ale, or a light-bodied red.
